Hi Grandad, I hope that you are being well looked after up there and that Tom and Jerry is on repeat! It feels very strange writing to you rather than being able to talk face to face. I wish that I could have said goodbye properly, it was so hard knowing that you were unwell in hospital and we couldn’t come to see you. However, I am brought some comfort from knowing that you were not alone in your final moments. You were very brave. I have so many fond memories of you that I don’t really know where to start! Every time I think of you I remember your smile and chuckle- you always saw the humour in every situation. and lit up the room with your smile. I definitely have you to thank for my love of cartoons- we used to spend hours watching Tom and Jerry and The Pink Panther together, it must have driven everyone else quite mad at times! I loved coming to stay with you and Nanny too when I was little, it always felt like a big adventure going home with you in your van after you finished work at the Nursery! At weekends when we came to visit, we would always walk to Hemsby for candy floss and I remember we tried to get back to yours as fast as possible so it didn’t dissolve before we got to eat it! Then there was the endless quizzing on Polish words from Emily and I- you would always oblige when you could remember! We were also especially pleased when you felt able to share some of your experiences in the war with us as we were always fascinated about your past- I will always remember you awarding us with a ‘chocolate boy’ (actually a Sylvanian Family!) for listening to you. I am so pleased that you got to meet Freddie and only wish you could have seen more of him, but it wasn’t to be with the World in crisis. You will forever hold a special place in my heart and will go with me always. I know you will be watching over us all and I will never forget the memories and fun times we have shared. If ever I feel sad, all I will need to do is think of you, your smile and your attitude to life. Thank you for all you have done and for being a lovely Grandad to me. Until we meet again, rest well Grandad, a true gentleman to the end. With lots of love from Rebecca xxx
